Secondly, I forgot to post some stuff in the first post, will probably do that some other time.
Success! I'm finally starting to remember some dreams properly, and today I remembered two in some detail: remembered enough to draw some simple things from one of them. I've been trying to write out as much about each dream that I remember having a few minutes after I wake up, where I spend the first few minutes in bed trying to consolidate (and failing miserably) the dreams and summarising them.
I'm guessing #dreams is probably trending across this blogosphere based on the posts that I've read (and I've read way too many when I should be doing work)
Basically, the second dream had a TARDIS in it. I'm not entirely sure why (maybe dreamspace is another dimension). Going in roughly reverse chronological order (because that's how I remembered this one, and TARDIS), I think TC [the philoso-physicist] had a tour of the TARDIS and decided to live in it. I think Kwanza and I said "wow, he finally gets to try it." Before this (since that was the end), the TARDIS disappeared on us and we had to take a car (no idea who 'we' are, I'm assuming it included someone who could drive) because AM took the TARDIS and dematerialised: it even made that whoosing/screeching sound that the engines make, which was pretty cool. And also because I decided to keep talking to some now-unremembered person.
Probably should have put something like ^ in Project Potemkin instead of that psuedo-scifi. Lol, that ship sunk a long time ago.
In the first dream, it's night and there's probably a nice full moon off in the distance, and I'm watching as some spectator in the desert at ground level. There's this white stone gate on a platform, with a door-like slab in the middle which is part of it. This slab rises up into the gate (which is more like a wall) like a sluice gate and a crapload of water comes out. Something passes into the town (I'm watching from the town's perspective) and takes something/someone else, after which both somethings (wow, strong descriptive writing there) recede back through the gate, where the slab slams back down.
Somewhere out in the desert is standing a decorative vase: it has simple, rotationally-symmetric patterns on it and is about half the height of an average person. Out comes this male waterbender (wow, Doctor Who and now Avatar) and makes some sort of water nymph, the eyes of which glow pale white under the moonlight. Finally, he summons a whirlpool of water which spins him along with the water back into the vase and seals it shut.
Vase = portal to the Avatar-universe, sounds like a good deal. Not sure what that nymph is doing in the desert though.
Assuming that the thought processes you had before you slept influence your dreams, I would deduce that watching Looney Tunes: Back in Action probably influenced my dreams, seeing as there were Daleks in that film, and there was an invisible portal somewhere. (Should probably buy Portal 2 after HSC)
Lolwhat, Daleks in a Looney Tunes work, what is this trickery?
Basically, a view into my subconscious: it's pretty damn crazy down there, and it's probably because I sleep so late.
______________
Whoops, this was meant to be a post about English. Well basically...
Went to school for the second time in a row [this is on Friday, I went to school on Thursday afternoon since I have lax sleeping patterns] to meet with my English teacher: this time, I actually got up before 9am for the first time in 3-4 weeks. It was insanely chilly and windy today, which made the wind chill factor something crazy.
Yeah basically, I got the advice that I needed for English, and got most of the advice that I’d need for the exams, except I forgot how I should structure my ModB and Belonging essays. Basically, I have a crapload of stuff to do for English: I should probably ban myself from FB until English is finally over (biology don’t matter too much, still going to study for it to not screw over our grade though).
Went to the school library several times today. Right before going to see my English teacher, I borrowed some bio books and appropriated/stole AMC papers for future use. At the library I saw the two girls who did/do accelerated chem in my class: damn, they’re in year 11.5 now (I think a year ago our grade called itself that). At lunch, those tables in the library were completely filled, and there were year 11(.5)s everywhere. We still get to use the study room surprisingly, which I guess is due to not having special provisions stuff required yet. Probably the last day for it though.
Ah, the school library. There are a surprising number of books which are at a level way beyond high school? A few centimetres from the Success One book for Physics is a book on a Cosmology Symposium, and further away is a book on Mathematical Methods in Physics for Graduates.
Yes, graduates, like, proper physics major graduates. I have no idea why these books are in our library (which makes me think that it’s actually superior to the one next to Towers). There’s also a book on Biochemistry for Med students (lol), and a engineering book on Photonic Devices written by Liu.
Lol, Harvard is a closet textbook author.
Back to English: I should probably make a list of stuff I actually need to do, so here we go:
- Restructure Belonging essay according to theme
- Insert/start/finish paragraphs for each of two belonging related texts (which are both videos)
- Divide AYLI essay into more paragraphs, add more context for each, write a little bit more on Frankenstein
- Write out essay paragraphs for all the Harwood poems. Every. Single. One.
- Adjust H&M essay into separate concepts and possibly incorporate collective memory as being a middle-ground between them [ffffuu- why didn't I come up with that idea earlier, apparently no-one else has that theme in their essay]
- Start/insert/finish related text paragraphs for H&M (in this case, the texts are a fairly long article and a non-fiction book)
- Come up with a message about belonging to incorporate into my creative, which is currently lacking focus and direction
- Revise techniques for the short-answer section, Meaning-->Technique-->Message/consequence
- Write every single essay several times
The HSC marks that I was hoping for before were something like:
English Adv: 85
Biology: 82
Chemistry: 90
Physics: 92
Math Ext 1: 96
Math Ext 2: 98
In reality, they're more likely to turn out as:
English: 75-80 (basically, crappy mystery) [hoping for 85-90 in external though]
Biology: 80
Chemistry: 88
Physics: 90
Math Ext 1: 94
Math Ext 3: 96
Cool ATAR and strong chance acquiring any scholarships bro: generic ATAR calculator says 98.8 for the first set, and 96.05-97.15 for the second set. These calculators tend to be unreliable (in the HSC science sense), so screw calculators
On scholarships: there was a UNSW scholarship for which you needed a combined HSC mark for ext 1+2 maths of 190/200, which I didn't apply for some reason. The one scholarship that I'm really hoping for is the NICTA-UNSW Research Scholarship, for which I might actually have a chance of acquiring an interview for. Then again, the application was basically a mini-Coop form, so maybe not. Guaranteed summer research would be so cool though.
The minimum ATAR that I would need to get into any of my course preferences though is 95, although TSP @ USyd which is a seriously cool-looking program requires 99 to be invited, so I guess things aren't too bad, going to make up with HD average in Uni. Seriously, I'm fairly confident I can HD average first-year easily since I've already learnt about a quarter of the stuff needed.
Wow, sorry this is such a darn long post guys, it's 0058 on Sunday, I better post this thing.
If you're reading because you happen to be procrastinating from English or because you already know everything and just want a pre-exam relaxation day, then good luck for the HSC!
Oh, and 'word' count: 1462
you'll do better than that for the sciences. don't know about english, but if you get through that list, 85 minimum.
ReplyDeleteif you're reading this and it's sunday go study
and honestly, in the wide scheme of things, it doesn't matter if you "only" make it into your 95 course, you'll still shine and excel there.
I'm not sure why I read this in a strange female voice. I think its your blog layout. Or you know, hsc is getting to me.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for the next few weeks!
hsc seems so much more interesting now that it's so close
ReplyDeletei'm going to start studying english after i finish these bio notes
